In 1865 French inventors Benoit Rouquayrol and Auguste Denayrouze invented the original self-contained breathing apparatus (scuba), but the aqualung was developed later by the two pioneers who receive most credit for inventing the modern scuba system. These pioneers are the Frenchmen Jacques Cousteau and Emil Gagnon. Their invention, is now called the Aqua Lung, and was first successfully used in 1943. It allowed divers to breathe underwater without a cumbersome diving suit.
Today we enjoy the benefits of those early pioneers with a large range of underwater equipment now available for our own recreation diving.
